Ladakh is a high-altitude desert region where rainfall is very limited. For generations, communities have depended heavily on snow and glacier meltwater. Snow normally melts during spring, providing water for farming and other needs. But changing weather patterns are disturbing this natural cycle. Snow is melting earlier, glaciers are retreating and some areas are experiencing longer dry periods. This can create a serious problem for farmers when water is needed for planting and cultivation. What Is An Ice Stupa? Sonam Wangchuk introduced the concept of Ice Stupas in Ladakh in 2013. An Ice Stupa is a huge cone-shaped structure made by freezing water during the cold winter months. Its shape resembles a Buddhist stupa, which is how it got its name. The basic idea is simple — store water as ice during winter and allow it to melt slowly when water is needed. Water is brought down from higher areas through pipes and sprayed into the freezing winter air. Layer by layer, the water freezes and forms a large tower of ice. When temperatures increase in spring and early summer, the Ice Stupa gradually melts and releases water. In this way, it works like a natural winter water bank. How Ice Stupas Help Communities The concept has already been used by villages in Ladakh. Water from an early Ice Stupa project was used to help villagers plant thousands of saplings, bringing greenery and cultivation to areas that were otherwise difficult to farm. The idea has since been adopted and experimented with by communities in different parts of Ladakh to address local water requirements. Now Wangchuk Is Supporting A Zanskar Water Project Wangchuk's work with Himalayan water is not limited to freezing water. In a recent Instagram post, he highlighted the project of Lobzang Rinchen, a young entrepreneur from Zanskar. Rinchen is working on a Himalayan spring water brand and plant that aims to use water available locally in the region. Currently, bottled water used in Zanskar is transported over long distances from Punjab. The new project aims to reduce this dependence by making use of local Himalayan spring water. Why Local Water Could Make A Difference Transporting bottled water over long distances requires trucks and fuel. For a fragile Himalayan region already facing the effects of climate change, reducing unnecessary transportation could help lower the environmental burden. The proposed project is designed to be local not only in terms of water sourcing but also in terms of employment and community participation. The Plan Includes Recycling And Community Benefits The project reportedly plans to create employment opportunities for local people. Bottle recycling is also part of the proposed plan. The initiative could include larger 20-litre water dispensers at shops, allowing people to refill containers instead of continuously buying smaller plastic bottles. Glass bottles could also eventually be supplied to hotels and restaurants. The plant is planned to operate using solar energy, adding another environmentally friendly element to the project. Instead, Wangchuk has shared the Ice Stupa brand name with Lobzang Rinchen as part of the broader idea behind the initiative. The connection is the approach: finding a local solution to a Himalayan water challenge while trying to reduce environmental impact. Ice Stupas store water in the form of ice for later use, while the Zanskar project focuses on making locally available spring water accessible within the region. Both ideas are linked by the larger goal of finding practical, locally suitable solutions to water-related challenges. A Local Idea For A Changing Himalayan Climate Communities in Ladakh and Zanskar cannot control when glaciers retreat or how quickly snow melts. However, they can explore new ways to manage the water available to them. Projects such as Ice Stupas and locally sourced spring water initiatives show how traditional regional needs can be addressed through innovation, local entrepreneurship and sustainable practices. For Zanskar, the proposed water plant could also create an opportunity to reduce dependence on supplies brought from outside the region while generating local employment.
